About Montessori

What is Montessori Education?

Montessori education is an educational approach developed by the Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori. Montessori education is practiced in an estimated 20,000 schools worldwide, serving children from birth to eighteen years old.

Montessori education is characterized by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological development, as well as technological advancements in society. Although a range of practices exists under the name “Montessori”, following elements are essential:

  • Mixed age classrooms, with classrooms for children aged 2½ or 3 to 6 years old by far the most common
  • Student choice of activity from within a prescribed range of options
  • Uninterrupted blocks of work time
  • A Contructivism or “discovery” model, where students learn concepts from working with materials, rather than by direct instruction
  • Specialized educational materials developed by Montessori and her collaborators

In addition, many Montessori schools design their curriculums with reference to Montessori’s model of human development from her published works, and use pedagogy, lessons, and materials introduced in teacher training derived from courses presented by Montessori during her lifetime.

Montessori Education is universal and is suitable for all children. Its philosophy and principles are uniform across all Montessori Schools and nurseries around the world. It appeals to all children as the hands-on learning approach enables the use of the 5 senses, making learning interactive and motivational.

When it comes to implementing Montessori principles in the home, most parents are intrigued by the idea, but they aren’t sure where to start. It starts with a change in mindset. As a parent, you have to start by understanding that children — even the littlest ones — are capable of more than you realize. Once you acknowledge this, then you can make some changes around your home to set yourself and your child up for Montessori success. Please see our About Montessori Section to read more about Montessori at home.

Our children do very well when they transition out of our nurseries. They possess the skills – confidence, independence, motivation – to adapt effectively. Our children develop self-awareness and self-confidence through self-directed learning. They take responsibility for their learning while at our nurseries, making them well-prepared to adapt to their new school setting.
